Earmarks, Earmarks and more Earmarks!!!
The battle on earmarks the White House is waging has heated up once more. It appears that Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO), who is the House Armed Services Committee Chairman, added a provision into the Defense Appropriation Bill a couple of weeks ago that countermands an executive order signed by President Bush that bars federal agencies to fund earmarks added in committee or by conference.
This insertion would then make the President’s executive order illegal and unenforceable, requiring these earmarks to be funded. Of course this was inserted into a “Must-Pass” appropriation bill, hoping to sneak this past the President and thereby allowing uncontrolled spending of our tax dollars.
This added provision was found by Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) who plans to offer an amendment that would strike the insertion when the authorization bill is considered on the U.S. House floor.
What is scary to me is that this comes from a
leadership that promised honest, open and transparent government and greater
accountability for earmarks. There is no telling how many times or ways they
will try to supersede the President’s authority on spending.
