What's New in the Republican Party

First there was the election of 18 delegates, who will be voting for the state party leadership next month. The delegates elected are George Roberts, Steve Nedeau, Franklin Tilton, Bill Tobin, Tom Brown, Don Flanders, Carl Johnson, Bob Holbrook, Helen Holbrook, Elaine Swinford, Laurie Boyce, Alan Glassman, Jan Glassman, Greg Knytych, Fran Wendelboe, Alida Millham, Dennis Fields, and Larry Scott. For an alternate there was a tie for the 19th position between Skip Murphy and Jim "Coach" Fitzgerald.
While the votes were being tallied Governor Sununu spoke about why he has decided to run, which is basically...
"The Democrats are Ruining Our State", which was repeated three times. He spoke about the fact that the Pew Research Foundation has placed New Hampshire 50th in ranking the states on the quality of services provided. This ranking had been consistently in the top 5 - 10 states. We were also told about a poll conducted by the National Council on State Legislatures that said there is only one state with a budget deficit of greater than 15% when compared to the General Fund. Unfortunately that state is New Hampshire. Another 50th place finish for us.
The Governor spoke about how this is also our fault for not holding Democrats accountable to their actions. "They take the pledge and then spend whatever it takes to satisfy their constituencies" said the Governor. What they end up doing is "create the necessity for new taxes and taxes we have chosen not to have". The Governor went on to say "They don't even understand what they've done to us."
The decline is often blamed on the people that moved here from Massachusetts but the fault is ours because they moved here for a reason and we aren't reminding them what that reason is.
Another point emphasized was that we have to return local control of the purse. The last 2 Democrat Governors have, with failing to fix education funding shifted a lot of control to Concord and the plan is to move all of that control. They don't realize that the more we limit local input and control the more state dependencies are created. That will never go away unless the control and the purse are returned to the local level.
A question was asked about the Republicans that aren't living up to the standards of the party. It has been noticed in the past few years that there has been a lot of in-fighting with Republicans on these type of issues and there has been fighting between the Conservative, Moderate and Liberal factions of the party. The Governor made it clear that when the Republicans are fighting amongst themselves the Democrats win and we must come together as a party and expand on those areas that we have agreement, not draw battle lines over those we disagree over and to work together United for what is best for OUR state.
it is going to take a lot of hard work on all of our parts to make the changes. We need to be speaking with our family, neighbors, friends and co-workers about what the party stands for. This all starts with a strong leader at the top. That is what New Hampshire will get with Governor John H. Sununu.
