You are right … You have no Knowledge of Religion …
It took some work but I managed to get through Leo Sandy’s letter to the editor in the Sun on Friday. He takes on religion in the military with this diatribe and mentions “I pretend no great knowledge of religion”, which is made clear by the words he writes.
Leo states, “Here is a supposed man of God praying for the death and destruction of other human beings. This is as absurd as something can get and it certainly makes a very strong case for atheism.”
If he had the slightest knowledge of religion he would realize that God has fought wars against evil to the beginning of time. God throwing Satan and his followers out of heaven was a battle in this war against evil. His descriptions of what religion and the military should be sound very much like what communist Russia thought in the 40’s and 50’s.
He goes on to say “God created humans – all humans and not just North Americans. I suppose that
This statement shows ignorance beyond religion. He clearly doesn’t understand the history of WWII.
Having served this fine nation in the military I can tell you that nobody likes wars but they are sometimes necessary to protect us from dictators that would rule the world with an iron fist. What I gather from Leo’s ramblings he would not stand up to protect even himself or his family against this evil onslaught. That is his right that OUR military has provided him.
As for the ramblings on General Patton’s prayer request to Chaplain O’Neill, this was not a prayer to destroy and kill the other side as presented. It is a prayer to remember God while in battle and to not destroy all signs of life. Chaplains do not serve two masters as Leo hypothesizes. They serve God and provide spiritual support to those who fight for our nation. They care for the mentally and physically wounded, provide sacrament to God’s followers that happen to wear a uniform, and they remind us to be good in the eyes of our Lord in EVERYTHING we do to the best of our ability.
If we are to follow Leo’s thoughts we should abandon this country and join a new world order where the dictates of despots and dictators make the laws. These laws would control our thoughts as well as our actions. The rights and freedoms that we have, both in our Constitution and Bible would be lost forever.
No Leo, I would prefer to keep our rights and freedoms, which includes your right to distort the truth.
